Art Trends: THEMATIC

Throughout the next month, we’ll explore current art trends in depth. The first one is THEMATIC – collections designed around a theme. Find the rest of our explorations on themes on the blog.

While thematic focuses have always played a role in design narratives, they are now taking center stage as a way to further connect guests and residents with the history of spaces and places, as exemplified by the collection at The Madison Hotel in Washington, DC. Kalisher worked in collaboration with the designers at The Gettys Group to create playful pieces that paid homage to the lives of Dolley Todd Madison and James Madison, alluding to the development of North American democracy.

Thematic art and design collections often include references to local culture, landmarks or landscapes, but those that go out of the box and over the top with unexpected themes create memorable experiences for guests. A couple of our favorite thematic projects are Cyrus Hotel in Topeka, KS, and the Hard Rock Hotel in Dublin, Ireland. Two completely different thematic collections bring two completely different moods to the table at these properties.

Kalisher worked with designers at Avenir Creative to build The Cyrus Hotel’s art collection, tying the hotel to its historic location in an iconic 100-year-old building using antique photographs, drawings, and documents juxtaposed with sleek furnishings to blend the hotel’s rich history with Topeka’s bustling modern scene.

The Hard Rock Hotel in Dublin, Ireland is of course themed around music like all Hard Rock Hotels. But for this collection, the Kalisher Curation team collaborated with artists to put together an incredible suite of art made by Irish artists featuring Irish musicians. The art is punchy, vibrant and colorful – perfect for Hard Rock’s brand and Dublin’s unique atmosphere.
