Discovering Noguchi in Atlanta
Few artists blurred the lines between sculpture, architecture, landscape, and design as seamlessly as Isamu Noguchi. A self-described sculptor and world citizen, Noguchi believed art should be experienced—not simply observed. That philosophy comes to life in Playscapes, his only realized playground, tucked into Atlanta’s Piedmont Park and featured alongside his retrospective exhibition at the High Museum of Art.
Originally designed in 1976 and recently restored to celebrate its 50th anniversary, Playscapes transforms concrete and metal sculpture into an invitation to explore. Its geometric forms encourage climbing, exploration, and interaction, proving that great design can be both beautiful and functional. Rather than separating art from everyday life, Noguchi imagined spaces where creativity, movement, and human connection naturally intersect.
