Creepy crawlies become utterly captivating in Lady Bug exhibition.
Hospitality thrives on surprise—the little moments that catch guests off guard and leave them inspired. Few things embody that spirit more than the work of Jennifer Angus, whose exhibition Lady Bug is now on view at the Zuckerman Museum of Art and Design at Kennesaw State University. Running from August 26 through December 5, the show transforms hundreds of insects into something truly unexpected: intricate wallpaper-like patterns and Victorian-inspired installations that turn the creepy-crawly into the utterly captivating.
Angus, the current Windgate Artist-in-Residence, is no stranger to reframing the familiar. During her residency, she’s been sharing her process in the university’s Textile and Surface Design studios, inviting students into her imaginative world where insects are not pests, but pigments; not specimens, but strokes in a grander design. Her compositions recall the ornate sensibilities of the Victorian age, while also nodding to the pioneering women of science—early female entomologists who painstakingly documented the diversity of bug species long before their contributions were widely celebrated.
Walking through the exhibition feels like stepping into a living fabric—history, science, and artistry woven together in a way that challenges how we see the natural world. For those of us in the hospitality and design space, Angus’s work offers a compelling reminder: inspiration can come from the most unexpected sources. Just as she turns beetles into pattern and moths into ornament, so too can we reframe everyday materials, spaces, and moments into something extraordinary for our guests.
And if you’re looking for a chance to dive deeper, mark your calendars: Jennifer Angus will give an artist talk and film screening on August 28, and her Windgate Artist-in-Residence lecture takes place November 6. Both events promise an inside look into the creative process behind Lady Bug—and a chance to discover how wonder often hides in plain sight.
So, the next time you find yourself searching for design inspiration, remember Angus’s lesson: beauty is everywhere, if you’re willing to look closely enough.
