Art in Focus: The Cartwright Hotel

Modular pieces create a contemporary mobile in The Cartwright’s lobby atrium.

Sparkling with gold, white, and deep blue petals, this custom sculptural piece curated by Kalisher was created in collaboration with the Best Western Design Team and brought to life by artist Abbie Powers as a welcoming focal point for guests entering the historic Cartwright Hotel. Built in 1915, the apartment-style building retains its antique charm with carved woodwork and ornate architectural details. The hotel team has heard guests comment on the installation’s charming shower of petals above the reception desk, and they have shared their delight in watching guests experience and enjoy the artwork.

Artist Abbie Powers is an expert in modular works, having created several for Kalisher projects in a wide range of elevated and architectural spaces. She carefully designs and cuts each bloom, then heats and shapes them by hand into unique forms. Stacked and suspended at varied heights, the petals appear to float and fall through the hotel’s double-height atrium. The dimensional installation is complemented by custom wallcoverings tailored to the unique lines of the space. See progress photos and the final installation below.
