Handcrafted waveforms by Leo Shallat infuse Azumi Restaurant’s sushi bar with the dynamic essence of the ocean.
Our Curators had the pleasure of collaborating with Patrick Sutton Design’s Senior Associate/Design Director, Irakli Imerlishvili, to integrate Leo Shallat’s calligraphic artistry with contemporary Japanese restaurant Azumi in Houston, TX. Known for his fluid and expressive line work, Shallat’s art is informed by his background in calligraphy. The waveform piece created for Azumi, although a single stroke, harmonizes with the restaurant’s ambiance and invites diners to explore its subtle details and fluid motion.
Shallat’s creative process reveals how he achieves depth in his work. Multiple brushes are thoughtfully mounted to a single wooden board with intentional spacing between them and manipulated as a single, wide brush. Paint is loaded onto brushes as a gradient that provides variation in tone and color to each large stroke and accents of gold are added to emphasize striations left between brushes. This technique brings a dynamic energy to both traditional and modern spaces, with slight variations in execution, allowing his pieces to complement many environments.
