This week we’re putting CNC-routed art in focus, diving into the details of how our CNC routers work and the clever capabilities we can execute by using them as a creative tool to further artistic designs.
So, how does a CNC-router work? Computer Numerical Control routers (CNC routers) are computer-controlled cutting machines that can move in three dimensions, allowing for delicately cut or carved details that would be prohibitively expensive to create without the router. A small, spinning blade on a mechanical arm hovers over the material to be routed, and moves up, down, and side to side to cut according to a programmed design.
Our manufacturing studios’ CNC-routers can be used to slice and dice substrates like Sintra, wood, and even canvas to produce artwork that leaps outside of the traditional frame, coming alive with shadows and tactile elements. Layers of printed acrylic or paper can be installed on top of each other to create art that shifts as the viewer moves around it, what’s visible through the layers peeking through in different ways depending on perspective. Sliced canvas can be stretched and pulled to create lacy patterns, optical illusions and depth. Edges of artworks can become limitless and organic, linear frameworks no longer constraining creativity! The possibilities are tantalizing.
In the same way that casting fine art sculptures allows for consistent reproduction of an original piece at a lesser cost, our CNC-routers also allow us to create beautiful dimensional works of art at guest room quantity without the time and expense of commissioning original, hand-cut works.
